Course summary

BTEC tech award in Health & Social Care allows you to develop an understanding of how humans grow and develop and how the different providers of health, social care and early years work to support this. During the course you will develop research and independent learning skills, crucial for any future study or career pathways in this and other sectors. You may want to study this course if you are interested in a ‘caring’ career in the future – such as working in Healthcare, Education, Social care or Childcare. Sometimes students who have been involved in caring for a relative in some way find they are particularly suited to the course.

What will students learn?

BTEC tech Award in Health & Social will involve you studying three component parts:

In Component 1: students will study human development across the life-course, considering the impact of lifestyle and genetic factors.

In Component 2: students explore the important work of local Health and Social care services and the skills needed to work within them.

In Component 3 students will consider factors that affect health and well-being; learn how to interpret physical and lifestyle data and devise & critique health improvement plans

How will students be assessed?

Component 1 and 2 are both written coursework assignments which are extended writing and research tasks. These are done in controlled conditions during lesson time and are assessed internally, then moderated externally.

Component 3 assessment is an externally set written paper taken under exam conditions. Students take this exam n the May of year 11, and it is marked externally by BTEC.

Course summary

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care aims to provide an introduction to the work of healthcare professionals and in supporting service users with varying needs. This course is comprised of coursework and examined units to ensure students develop an applied understanding of the delivery of effective care. The course will be useful if you are intending to pursue a career in the public sector, social care or healthcare; for instance, as a police officer, social worker or health visitors, practice nurse or occupational therapist. The course will also be invaluable if you wish to progress to higher education, to degrees in areas such as health and social care management, social work, youth work, teaching, midwifery or nursing.

What will students learn?

  • Unit 1: Human lifespan and development - Exam

Health and social care practitioners need to develop a knowledge base for working with people in every stage of their lives, and they need to know how their own experiences relate to health and wellbeing. Although it is generally accepted that there may be deterioration in health with age following adulthood, medical intervention means people are living longer and have better life prospects. This unit will develop your knowledge and understanding of patterns of human growth and development. You will explore the key aspects of growth and development, and the experience of health and wellbeing. You will learn about factors that can influence human growth, development and human health.

  • Unit 5: Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs - Coursework

In this unit, you will learn about the values and principles of meeting care and support needs and look at some of the ethical issues that arise when personalising care. You will examine factors that can impact the professionals who provide the care and support, and the challenges that must be overcome to allow access to good quality care and health services. You will explore the different methods used by professionals across all care services. You will reflect on these methods when you consider the importance of multi-agency working in providing a package of care and support that meets all the needs of individuals. In this unit you will draw on your learning from across your programme to complete assessment tasks.

  • Unit 2: Working in Health and Social Care - Exam

This unit will help you to understand what it is like to work in the health and social care sector. When working for an organisation in this sector, you will have important responsibilities that you need to understand and carry out. These include maintaining the safety of and safeguarding individuals with health and social care needs, making sure that you properly handle their personal information and preventing discrimination towards them. You will need to understand how you will be accountable both to these individuals and the regulatory bodies that represent people who work in the health and social care sector. It is necessary for you to understand how your work will be monitored when you carry out a specific role such as doctors, nurses or social workers.

  • Unit 14: Physiological Disorders - Coursework

In this unit, you will choose different illnesses or conditions that you are interested in finding more about. You will learn about their signs and symptoms and how they are investigated and diagnosed. You will also learn about the different types of treatment and support available for individual service users, including surgery, rehabilitation and complementary therapies. You will create a treatment plan for a service user one of your chosen disorders. This will help you understand the treatment and support strategies involved, the contributions of different professionals and the importance of providing individualised care. This unit will form a good basis for higher education study in health and social work courses and nursing qualifications. The information and activities will also help to prepare you for a variety of careers within the health and social care sector.

How will students be assessed?

Unit 1: Human lifespan and development – External exam worth 25% of overall grade.

Unit 5: Meeting Individual care and support needs – Coursework worth 25% of overall grade.

Assessment in class will take place throughout the year. For coursework assessed units this will usually comprise of working on coursework. For exam based units this will comprise exam questions completed in lessons / for prep and tests in line with the school CP dates.

Unit 2: Working in Health and Social Care – External exam worth 34% of overall grade.

Unit 14: Physiological Disorders – Coursework worth 16% of overall grade.
