Course Summary

At Wrenn we will be following the all new AQA GCSE course which offers you the opportunity to study a range of global issues and understand how the physical world works and your place within it.

What will students learn?

If you are interested in the world around you and how all of planet Earth is connected then GCSE Geography is for you. It is really important that you enjoy thinking for yourself, you may not agree with other people’s opinion so can you justify your own? GCSE Geography will build on your existing skills and knowledge from lower school and also makes links with other subjects including Maths and Science.

How will students be assessed?

There are three key areas of this new course:

  1. Living with the physical environment (35% of the course).

In this unit you will be learning about natural hazards such as volcanoes and hurricanes and why people chose to live in danger zones and how they cope. We will take a closer look at the United Kingdom and its physical landscape and how features such as our mountain ranges were formed. We will also examine the living world where you will look at desert environments and how people and animals can live in such harsh conditions.

  1. Challenges in the human environment (35% of the course)

In this unit of work we will look at the issues of living in a global world (ever wondered why everything seems to be made in China?) and how we can manage the resources we have left. We will also look at how countries are all connected together and the challenges people face with living in megacities such as Tokyo.

  1. Geographical Applications (30% of the course)

This is the section of the course where we teach you skills and how to evaluate global issues. Fieldwork is really important here, you will be going on a residential visit so you can get learn a full range of skills and techniques. Our fieldwork location will include a residential trip to Juniper Hall in the North Downs in Surrey. Here you will have the opportunity to collect data on both the human and physical aspects of Geography.

The exams will be a mixture of multiple choice questions with some short and longer response answers.
