2 languages offered: French and Spanish.

The topics covered prepare students for a future languages GCSE. These contain themes such as family and school and culture in France and Spain in years seven and eight, moving to more in depth topics such as future careers and the environment in year nine. Emphasis is on acquiring key vocabulary, developing listening and speaking skills, and guiding them through GCSE style written tasks

Course summary

Modern languages are amongst the most well-regarded GCSE qualifications and part of the English Baccalaureate.

Learning a foreign language is proven to have benefits not only for your brain but also for your future career and employability. Besides, it will make you more open-minded as you will learn about different cultures and traditions. This will help you become a more global and active citizen.

What will students learn?

Students will be able to describe and talk about family members, friends and relationships. They will also learn about social media and new technologies as well as free time activities such as music, cinema, TV, sports, food and eating out

In addition to that, they will be able to describe and talk about their house, neighbourhood and region, learn about social issues, charity/ voluntary work and healthy / unhealthy living. They will be able to talk about global issues such as the environment and poverty/homelessness. This will help them develop great critical thinking. Finally, they will learn about travelling and tourism which will allow them to implement the language on such occasions.

As well as the above, they will be able to describe and talk about studies, life at the school, education post 16 such as university or college and finally about careers, jobs and ambitions.

How will students be assessed?

Students will be assessed on 4 skills (Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing). Each skill will weigh 25% of the overall GCSE and every skill will be assessed in separate papers.

The exam board used is AQA and students will be tiered to foundation or higher for their final entry.

Course summary

The course builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills gained at GCSE and fosters a range of transferable skills, including communication, critical thinking and creativity. The content has been designed to be of relevance to students of all disciplines.

Students will develop their understanding of themes relating to the society and culture of the countries where French/Spanish/Polish are spoken, and their language skills. The approach is a focus on how the society has been shaped, socially and culturally, and how it continues to change. Students will also have to study a book or/and a film.

What will students learn?

All topics will be centred on the culture of countries where the language is spoken.

Students will learn about:

The changing nature of family (Trends/differing family structures/ generational gap/ equality between genders)

The 'cyber-society’? (impact on life/ Dangers/ future developments)

The influence of the idols

Artistic culture (Cinema/ regional heritage/ contemporary music)

Positive features of a diverse society (Diversity/ tolerance/respect)

Life for the marginalised (support structures)

Criminality (Attitudes/ success or failure of punishment systems)

Teenagers, the right to vote and political commitment

Demonstrations, strikes – who holds the power? (

Politics, racism and immigration

How will students be assessed?

Year 12

Speaking:

Duration: 12/14 minutes. (30%) The test will be in two parts. Discussion of 2 sub-themes based on card-stimulus

Writing : 1 hour 30: Translation paper from English into the target language + essay writing on set text or film: 25%

Listening, reading and writing: 1 hour 45: 3 papers: Comprehension of spoken or written texts as well as a translation from Spanish into English: 45% of total mark

Year 13

Speaking:

Duration: 12/14 minutes. (30%) The test will be in two parts. Discussion of 1 theme and Part 2 will be the presentation and discussion of the student’s individual research project.

Writing: 2hours: 1 essay question on the 2 works studied (300 words per essay): 20%

Listening, reading and writing: 2 hours 30: 3 papers: Comprehension of spoken or written texts as well as a summarising a text: 50% of total mark

*** Polish may be different as there is no Speaking component

Differentiation

The more able will explore topics in depth and will be guided by self-study research packs made specifically by teachers on the topic of the students' choice.

Resources

Our existing text books have a clear link with the AQA specification. There is also access to resources via the Kerboodle site. It is strongly recommended that students use Spanish news websites which provide an invaluable source for understanding the language and gathering factual information about the topics studied.

AQA are also in the process of developing a range of apps to be available soon.
